Hamster Diet
Diet care is very important because some hamsters are prone to diabetes so its good to keep a low sugar diet, even if they aren't prone to diabetes. Here's some tips to help:
-
Remove all sunflower seeds and leave 1 or 2.
-
Remove peas, pumkin seeds (add 1 seed) corn, potatoes, tomatoes, leaks or garlic related veges.
-
Add a pinch of flax seeds, 1 mealworm and a pinch of oats every 3 days.
-
Feed treats, vegies or fruits 1-2 times a week although feed very little fruit since it contains natural sweetners.
-
Store bought treats should be given sparingly.
-
Yogurt drops, milk drops or treats with high fat or sugar should be given 1-2 times a month (1 time to hamsters that are prone to diabetes).
You could also give your hamster specific dog treats that don't contain garlic related food, fat or sugar in it. I like the pedigree milk bones and marrow bones because they are good chews and have a lot of meat protein but give in a very sparingly manner. You can also give it a little cooked turkey, chicken or meat that is cold as long as there is no bones or fat.
